Common E-commerce Listing Mistakes (and How to Fix Them)
Small listing errors can make products harder to find and less likely to sell. Check your marketplace listings against these common mistakes.
On marketplaces such as Amazon and Flipkart, and on your own Shopify store, the product listing is your salesperson. Small mistakes can reduce visibility in search results and make shoppers choose a competitor instead.
1. Vague or overstuffed titles
Titles should clearly state what the product is, with key attributes such as brand, material, size or quantity. Stuffing them with repeated keywords makes them hard to read and may breach marketplace style guidelines.
2. Low-quality or incomplete images
Shoppers cannot touch the product, so images do the work. Use a clean main image that follows the platform’s requirements, plus lifestyle, detail, scale and infographic images that answer common questions.
3. Bullet points that list features, not benefits
Instead of only stating “100% cotton”, explain why it matters: breathable, soft and comfortable for everyday wear. Lead each bullet with the benefit most relevant to buyers.
4. Ignoring backend keywords and categories
Incorrect categories and missing search terms can stop products appearing for relevant searches. Review category placement and use backend fields for synonyms and alternative spellings.
5. Messy variations
Separate listings for each size or colour split your reviews and confuse shoppers. Group variations correctly so customers can choose options on one page.
6. Not reading customer questions and reviews
Repeated questions or complaints often reveal missing information. Update listings and images to answer them directly.
